Melanoma

Affected animal: Horse

What is it?
Melanoma is one of the most common skin tumors in horses. It primarily affects horses with the so-called grey gene, meaning gray horses. Arabian and Spanish horses are among the breeds with the highest incidence of melanoma. Melanomas can occur anywhere on the body, but are most frequently found around the tailhead and anus. They initially appear as small, black nodules under the skin with a smooth surface.

Where and how do we begin?
Because melanomas are very sensitive skin diseases in their structure and composition, creams should initially be applied around the affected area. This approach stimulates the skin's immune system to deal with the changes and support their regression.

Attention! Please be aware of the difference between sarcoids and melanomas; both belong to the category of skin tumors, but their treatment differs. You can read more about sarcoids here.

Important! While DMSO can be used to support the treatment of sarcoids/warts, it MUST NOT be used on melanomas!

IMPORTANT! All suggested measures do not replace an examination by a veterinarian.
