Summer time – fly time

Today I would like to share my experiences, my thoughts, and my thoughts with you.

Flies are a summer nuisance that we constantly try to avoid. Hundreds of sprays are used, and fly sheets and similar products are in high demand.

The result is often quite unsatisfactory, and actually, the otherwise beautiful summer is always a torment. And if it's not the flies, then you can prepare for horsefly season starting in July.

Let's try to understand the fly for a moment. We observe them regularly at this time of year, and we also find these little pests in the house. But where do we find them? Basically always where something needs to be put away.

The moment I first consciously registered this thought, I soon received an assignment to Kuwait. A land of contrasts, beautiful with magnificent stud farms. A fairytale from One Thousand and One Nights. Magnificent horses... and flies!!

I was accompanied by the TAs who were in charge of stud management, and I still remember our conversations vividly. We also talked about flies, and I was asked at the time if I had a solution. Throughout the stables, there were bowls containing dissolved substances that attracted the flies and killed them shortly afterward. But as the old saying goes: one dies... ten come to the funeral. That's exactly what happened here.

One day, we were walking attentively through the stables. We noticed that one horse was covered in flies, the second was flies-free, the third had a moderate infestation, and so on. The cause of the out-of-control fly infestation is, and always has been, metabolism. This is responsible for whether the horses release pheromones that attract these annoying flying insects. Why this metabolism is so unbalanced in some cases... the reasons are as numerous as the flies themselves.

There are now as many ways to restore metabolic balance as there are causes for its disruption. And each animal should be considered individually. That's why there can never be a one-size-fits-all solution. What works for one animal may be useless for another.

Nevertheless, one should pay closer attention if one finds a significant number of flies on a particular part of the body. Perhaps this will prompt you to observe your animals more closely and pay more attention to the flies themselves. Ultimately, while they are annoying, they can be quite useful in other contexts.

By the way... this also applies to ticks and the like.
